Infection Control

Proper storage in every area of hospitals makes a positive contribution to infection control measures. Fighting infection is about much more than hand-washing. It is about keeping every part of the patient environment clean all of the time because infections like MRSA and C.diff are still very much a threat.

The issues of tidiness and storage are well recognised and Trusts are engaged in ‘de-cluttering' initiatives, increasing storage capacity in new builds and refurbishment schemes and establishing equipment stores locally to alleviate the problem of storage at ward level.

In addition, patients and visitors are being asked to keep to a minimum personal items brought into the hospital. However, storing these personal items either in reception areas or outside wards in clearly marked facilities is a further step to reducing Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs).
